Gloria Challen (Saltash West Ward)
In more recent years, I have been a member of many local organisations, and a team member in local projects and events …… Saltash Christmas Lights, Saltash May Fair, Saltash Winkle fair, and Saltash Regatta. As a local woman I have always been very willing to give something back to the town that I have lived and worked, and has been my home for over 50 years. 10 years ago I joined Saltash Lions Club as a volunteer as I am very keen to help and support residents within Saltash and was elected Vice President.
In 2013 I was elected to Saltash Town Council having fought a very busy election. During the first 4 years I was a member of, Service Committee, Policy and Finance, which I held the position as Vice Chair. I have supported residents within the West Ward where I was elected by attending and speaking on their behalf at Cornwall Council on planning matters. 2017 elections I was delighted to be re elected as a Town Councillor after fighting a heavily contested election. In those 4 years I also served on Service Committee, Policy and finance, Personnel Committee, member of the working group of the Civic Regalia, as chair. I have been an active member of the Saltash Flood Forum and the Saltash Great War Commemorative Events Committee.
In 2018 I was elected as Deputy Mayor and in 2019 I was honoured to be elected as Saltash Mayor.
During my year as Saltash Mayor I have been an active member of the Council by working alongside so many Organisations and groups. In 2020 I was appointed to Cornwall Council Standards Committee, which oversees best practice for local Councils and Councillors.
2020 came and so did the unprecedented Coronavirus which lead the country into lockdown. As with many types of Councils, Saltash Town Council agreed to keep Chairs and Vice Chairs in situ due to the unprecedented times of not being able to hold public meetings. During these periods I have remained serving the Town of Saltash as Mayor and carried out my Civic duties and holding meetings by virtual means, of which members of the public could zoom in. Due to lock down I helped set up a community kitchen from one of our businesses where we provided a free hot meal to those residents that were self-isolating. I have continued engaging with other Civic heads around Cornwall by virtual technology, so I can make sure Saltash is not forgotten and to be sure that I am in tune with our neighbours and Councils around Cornwall and share knowledge that can help the residents that I represent within Saltash. I have been very pleased to play a significant role in helping a local resident to set up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme in an area of Saltash during these difficult times.
Furthermore, I have kept in touch with Saltash residents by various means, including ….Facebook, Twitter, local papers and actively helping those in need in lockdown.
