How to Purchase a Plot

Churchtown Cemetery is open for interments for both Saltash residents and non-residents. Due to the limited capacity of the cemetery, a higher fee applies for burials of individuals who were not residents of Saltash.

All burials and memorials must comply with the current cemetery rules and regulations.

Please note that we are unable to reserve or offer pre-purchased plots for future use.

Requests for burials are required to be made through a Funeral Director. For general guidance on arranging a funeral, further information is available on the Cornwall Council website: Cornwall Council Funerals and Cremations

Funeral directors will arrange the purchase of an Exclusive Right of Burial as part of the funeral process. These rights may be purchased for new graves or cremation plots. The Deed of Grant of Exclusive Right of Burial is the official document which allows the deed holder to organise a burial or cremation interment within the plot or install a memorial on the plot. The land itself remains the property of the burial authority.

Saltash Town Council issues a Deed of Grant of Exclusive Right of Burial for a period of 10 years, with the option to renew at the end of that term. It is important that the deed holder keeps this document safe, as it is the only legal proof of entitlement to burial and memorial rights.  Full details are available in the application forms below.

Grave Digging

Arrangement for grave digging is the responsibility of the Funeral Director. Only persons approved by the Town Council are permitted to dig graves within Churchtown Cemetery.

Memorials

All memorials require prior approval from Saltash Town Council. This includes:

New headstones

Additional inscriptions

Replacement memorials

Please refer to the Memorial Application and Rules & Regulations documents for permitted designs, materials, and sizes.

Memorial Safety

The Town Council carries out routine memorial safety inspections to ensure the cemetery remains safe for all visitors. If an issue is identified, deed holders will be contacted using the details held on record.

Memorial Rose Garden

A rose bush can be planted within a designated area at Churchtown Cemetery and is available on a 10 year renewable lease. The initial price includes the provision of the bush and a plaque bearing a short inscription which is placed in front of each rose.

During the lease period the roses are maintained by members of Town Council staff and may also be replaced within the first two years should the need arise. Please note that no other items are permitted in the rose beds and rose bushes/plaques are not permitted within any other area of Churchtown Cemetery.

Letters to Heaven

The red post box situated at the entrance to Churchtown Cemetery was installed for grieving people to write letters to heaven. The letters to lost loved ones can be posted in a sealed envelope using the post-box.

Items posted can be anything from cards for events such as birthdays, anniversary and Christmas to letters and messages. The post box is not owned or serviced by Royal Mail so no stamp is required.

Every item posted will be treated with confidentiality and will not be opened. Staff will regularly remove the items from the post box and store them securely until they are included in the Town Council's green waste process for disposal.

A map of Churchtown Cemetery is available to view and / or download. Please note that the map is being updated and may not yet show all burial plots.
