Service Delivery Department

Saltash Town Council Service Delivery Department provides a range of services for the benefit of its local residents and visitors. We are responsible for maintaining a variety of public buildings along with open green spaces and the environment. This can include parks, play areas, and other outdoor facilities open to the public. Some work activities include the use of ride-on mowers, tree pruning and felling, strimmer’s for grass areas and hedge cutting. As the Services Team we also cover cemeteries, public toilets, allotments, public gardens, the waterfront pontoon, as well as events and celebrations.

Churchtown Cemetery

We have been working on the boundaries of the Cemetery in preparation for the fast approaching winter. This is a good time to cut back the summer growth so that it will help get through the winter period and into spring next year.
We will be working on other location in a similar way over the next couple of months weather permitting.

Fore Street Electrical Boxes

The Town Council have a variety of street furniture to maintain. There are six black electrical boxes down Fore Street that we have re-painted and added new electrical warning signs. This helps to give a better look to our main high street and area.

Ashton Way Play Park

Further work has been carried out at Ashton Way Play Park to cut the grass and surrounding hedges. This is to keep the parks as neat as possible for children to play safely.

Winter Cutting Wild Flower Areas.

As part of our Wilding Program we have cut down the wild flower borders around St Stephens Churchyard and Churchtown Cemetery. This will be part of the winter preparation getting ready for next spring. We will be adding extra seeds to add to the existing flowers.

Elwell Woods Work

Over the last few days we have been helping the SEA Group of volunteers to work in Elwell Woods near the Cornwall Cross. This has included clearing the orchard area, repairing steps and clearing pathways.

If you haven been before take some time to take a walk through the woodland.

Fairmead Allotments Fencing

Saltash Town Council also manage some allotment sites in the Town. One of which is Fairmead. We have recently replaced the entrance fencing which has also made the site easier to access for the tenant who use the site. We will be working on other parts of this site soon the enhance the pathways and safety.

Churchtown Cemetery Work

The cemetery forms part of the land portfolio that Saltash Town Council currently manage. We look after the grounds, trees, hedging, toilets and our store yard on this sight. Part of our duty is to also assist when ceremonies take place making sure everything goes to plan. We also have our letters to heaven post box.

Churchtown Allotment Work

Part of our management is to look after the allotments at Churchtown. We have been strimming the pathways, hedges and grass areas around the site over the last couple of days.

We like to keep the area as neat as possible for the tenants that work on there plots and to anyone that may visit.

St Stephens Churchyard Memorial Graves

Our department has recently cut pathways through the old sections of the Churchyard toward the War graves and Fireman's graves for visitors to see. We have also cut extra pathways allowing access. We have left most of the grass long as part of a wilding project in conjunction with the Church. We have added some extra images showing the work.

Station Platform Flower Planters Project

Recent work carried out at the Saltash Train Station platform. We are working in conjunction with GWR to maintain the look of the platform to enhance the appearance of the flower planters. The boats will be maintained by the Rotary club and will be planted soon.

We are very keen to work with this project making the station a welcome site.

Isambard House Kitchen Project

We have been upgrading the facilities within the Isambard House building by fitting a new kitchen. This will provide a fully working kitchen to be used alongside any room bookings or events booked by the public. This has been a projected carried out by the Service Delivery Team over the last month. We very much hope this will enhance the use of the building with more bookings.

St Stephens Churchyard Work

Our Team has been busy making a difficult area to maintain far better and easier for the staff and public to visit. We have removed the grass area to the old ashes square replacing with a granite design that will have flowers to the center soon. If you get a chance to take a look we are sure you will like what you see. The project will be completed soon.

Work carried out cutting the grass at the St Stephens Churchyard. This takes a few days to complete due to the size of the grounds.

Grass And Hedge Cutting

Over the last couple of days the Service Delivery Team have been hard at work cutting the hedges, pathways around Pillmere. We have also cut the Meadow now that the summer flowers are coming to the end. This all form part of the wild flower management plan. They will be back next year.

Brunel Bust Fencing

Part of our duties are to maintain the Towns locations of interest. One of which is the Brunel Bust which faces the bridge and entrance into Saltash. We have been dealing with the fencing that surrounds the bust to make it more secure. We have also cleared brambles and ivy that was taking over.

Work at Fairmead Allotments

The Team have been hard at work cutting back the overgrown brambles to the entrance of Fairmead allotments. We have also cleared some overhanging trees, shrubs and plants to the boundaries. This has also included the pathways. It was a very wet day but that didn't stop the work being done.

Town Roundabouts

An early morning start at 7am saw our team out cutting the three Town Roundabouts we manage. This can be dangerous work with traffic and getting machinery to each roundabout. However the work was completed today along with other areas cut as the Team goes round the Town. One of theses areas is Trematon Pound. Murders Plot Clearing

The Service Delivery Team spent some time clearing the little know murders plot at the top end of the lane past St Stephens Church. There is some history behind this plot if you wish to look it up.

Old Entrance At St Stephens Church

Part of our management is dealing with the maintenance at St Stephens Church. A request from the Church was to block off an old gate entrance to the boundary wall. This now secures the access to the nursing home garden formally the rectory, yet giving the impression of a gate.

Tree Work On Pillmere

Over the last couple of days some work took place cutting a desired tree with our tree surgeon on the Pillemer estate. We then dealt with clearing the site of all the cut branches and debris. The tree stump has been left for wildlife to use.

Pathways on Pillmere

During the dry weather the pathways through the Pillmere Estate have been cut making the area very neat and tidy for residents to use. The work takes time as there are many paths and steps on the estate to manage. We hope you would agree how nice the area looks. More images are on our gallery page.

Churchtown Entrance

Part of our duty is to keep the entrance road leading from St Stephens Church to Churchtown Cemetery clear and tidy. We carried this work recently which has much improved the access.

Town Center Presentation

Our Service Delivery Team are committed to keeping the Town Centre looking as neat as possible through the summer. More work to a number of the planting areas took place over the last couple of days. We hope you agree with how Fore Street and surrounding areas are looking.

Cutting Back Overgrown Trees

Our Team have spent tow days cutting back the overgrown trees coming over from Aston Play Park into a residential service lane. This was a much needed job as it was proving difficult for residence to use the lane. We needed to close the lane as safety while using machinery is very important. As you can see the result is transforming resorting the lane back to glory.

Each week the Service Delivery Team maintain the Town Peace Garden with grass cutting, weeding, shrub trimming and edging to keep this Garden looking at its best. We hope you agree! please take some time to take a visit and take five minutes on one of the benches.

Regatta Weekend

Our department work very hard over the weekend supporting the Town Regatta.
This was on the Saturday and Sunday Erecting two Gazebos and equipment for the Meet The Councilor's and the Library Hub. Our Lady Mayor had a lovely time in the bath raising fund for charity. The team covered other duties through the day dealing with the public plus making sure the local amenities were in operation. The weather also played a part with the sun shining.

Ashton Way Play Park Cutting

The Service Delivery Team have been out this week in all weathers maintaining the play parks we manage on the Pillmere estate. Aston Way is one of the larger parks which takes some time. Lets hope the sun comes out soon.

Grass Cutting In The Rain

It hasn't been a great start to the week with the weather, however that hasn't stopped our Team from working hard cutting the grass at the Churchyard and cemetery at St Stephens and Churchtown.

Lets hope the rain stops for the Regatta weekend.

Entrance To Saltash

As you enter Cornwall the first town is Saltash. You will see that we have been working to make the entrance to our Town look as nice as we can. Weeding, flower planting, hedge trimming and placing decretive bark to the green areas all help to make Saltash welcoming.

Pathway And Step Clearing On Pillmere Estate

Over the last few days our Service Delivery Team have been working hard to trim back and clear the pathways and steps that run through the estate. This is an ongoing task however we will continue to keep the area as neat as possible.

Removing old Boat At The Waterside Green

We have recently removed a very old boat used as a planter sitting on the green. It had become a bit of an eyesore so it was decided to remove it. We have re-seeded the patch left with new grass seed.

Town Flower Watering Program

The Team have been watering the flower planters, beds and hanging baskets from 7am every day since they have been planted at the beginning of June. This program will continue through till the end of the summer going into September. We are committed to keeping the town as colorful as possible.

Grass Cutting at Churchtown Cemetery.

The Service Delivery Team have been out around the the Town cutting many grass areas. One are we are keen to keep looking nice is Churchtown Cemetery. Take a look at the other images showing the extent of the work via the link.
This area also extends to the allotments which are also cut and maintained by the department.

Pathway Grass Cutting At Pillmere Estate

We have started the work cutting back the grass edges to the pathways, green areas, the large green and surrounding open spaces. This will take time over the next week.

St Stephens Churchyard Grass Cutting

There has been a lot of work taking place over the last week cutting back the long grass in the Churchyard. We have almost completed this time consuming task. Once finished it wont be long before we have to start from the beginning again.

Ashton Way Play Park

The play parks on Pillmere are another part of our management for the estate. We have been busy cutting these areas ready for the weekend.

Hope the rain stays away so the children can enjoy using the parks.

Round And Round The Roundabouts

Part of our program is to maintain three roundabouts in Saltash, Waitrose, Pillmere and Latchbrook. This can be quite a challenge with busy traffic to contend with. The Team are out at 6am to tackle the busiest being Waitrose. You may have seen our staff carrying out this work making the roundabout neat and tidy. Please drive carefully if you see them it would be very much appreciated.

Back At St Stephens Churchyard.

Now that No Mow May is over we have been back at St Stephens Churchyard hard at work cutting the large grass areas. This takes time at this time of year, however the effort is worth the wait. You will see we are still trying to keep some wild areas to the edge of the grounds as we still want to encourage wildlife the this location.

D-Day Beacon Lighting At Ashtorre Rock

To commemorate the 80th Year of the D-Day landings, Saltash Town Council carried out a remembrance evening with the Mayor and Councilors at Ashtorre Rock. Along with a minutes silence there was speeches a band and a loan piper playing. At 9.15pm the beacon was light to remember all of those who had fought for us all.

Beautiful Hanging Baskets

Have you seen the beautiful hanging baskets that have now been placed down Fore Street and the Waterfront? We think the add some wonderful colour to the Town. You may see our Team out early each morning watering the baskets and bedding plants from 6am to keep them looking wonderful.

New Bench On St Stephens Road

We have been working in partnership with Cornwall Councilors Hilary Frank and Sheila Lennox-Boyed through their Cornwall Council Community Chest Grant. This was agreed at the August 2023 services meeting under Minute number 60/23/24. We have now fitted a new bench on St Stephens Road replacing the old damaged one. A commemorative plaque will be added soon. We hope you will enjoy using this bench.

Summer Planting Has Begun

Transforming The Town With Flowers

We are very pleased to have been able to start the transformation of planting out the Town flowerbeds and planters. The Peace Garden is looking lovely already. We have more to do so keep your eye on the rest of the Town.

Summer Planting

Flowers and plants are springing up in the Town.

Summer Is On Its Way !

We have been very busy planting the summer flowers through the Town Centre this week. This year we have chosen a mixture of bedding plants, herbs and evergreen shrubs. We hope this will add some colour and texture to the planters and flower beds for you to enjoy. We have been working in partnership with Tartendown Nursery who have been helping the Team with advise and planting.

Peace garden

Preparation For The Mayor Making Celebration.

The Service Delivery Department has been hard at work preparing for the New Mayors day taking place today. The peace garden and surrounding areas have been cut cleaned and litter cleared away.

Cutting Of The Play Parks On Pillmere Estate

While the weather has been on our side the play parks on Grassmere and other locations on the Pillmere estate have been cut. These areas are not part of the No Mow May due to there use.

Creating Wild Green Areas At St Stephens Churchyard

Over the next few months we will be trailing some locations to create some green areas to encourage bees, insects and wildlife. We have started this project in St Stephens Church Cemetery. We are looking to have more areas with wild flowers to add some colour around the Town.

Gate Repair At Churchtown Cemetery

We have been working hard today to repair the broken gate post at Church Town Cemetery. Not the easiest of jobs but it will look great when its finished.

Re-wilding areas we are looking to create

No Mow May

The service delivery Team will be taking part in the NO MOW MAY in various locations around Saltash. We do wish to point out that this won’t apply to some areas like the cemeteries, however some areas, edges, corners or around the base of trees will be left to encourage wildlife and natural plants to flourish. We will also be looking at some re-wilding areas and wild flower locations throughout the year. This is a positive step toward helping the local environment in the Town and encourage anyone to try this even in your own garden space.

Michael Stephens

Michael Stephens Joins The Service Delivery Team

We have recently expanded the Service Delivery Team with Michael Stephens joining us. He has a lot of experience in ground works, general building, fencing and machinery and we are very pleased to have him on board.

The Team has also recently successfully completed a certified training course through Corserv for the ride on mower and pedestrian mowers. The staff are continuously monitored to make sure they are fully trained on all the equipment we operate so that we can work safely in maintaining Saltash Town and surrounding areas.

Getting Ready For Summer

The Service Delivery Team have been busy carrying out work in the Peace Garden preparing it for the summer planting, cutting the grass in the Honeysuckle Play Park on Pillmere and at Silver Street, the Brunel Bust and Churchtown Cemetery.
