Saltash Penny and Fruit Throwing Event 2026

Join us for this year’s much-loved Penny and Fruit Throwing Event, where the Mayor of Saltash, Cllr Brian Stoyel, and the Civic Party will throw hot pennies and fruit from the Guildhall windows. This traditional ceremony dates back to the 13th century, when wealthy townspeople threw coins and pieces of fruit from the Guildhall’s first-floor windows to children gathered below. It was a gesture of generosity and celebration within the community. While its exact origins have been lost over time, the tradition is closely linked to the historic “Mayor Choosing” ceremony and the granting of town charters in the medieval period.
